ADMISSIONS – INDEPENDENT LIVING

Residents in both the rental and life lease units must be 55 years of age and over and able to live independently. Residents under the age of 55 may be accepted in exceptional circumstances by the Executive Committee because of special needs requirements.

Four divisions offer independent living accommodation in Bethany: Subsidized Rental, Non-Profit Rental, Life Lease Apartments and Life Lease Townhouses. Each division has separate guidelines governing admission. Applicants may apply for more than one division and will be admitted where they qualify first.

Vacancies on any particular waiting list will be filled alternately with internal and external applicants, Administration and Maintenance schedules allowing.

The Executive Committee acts as Admissions Committee and approves all admissions to Bethany.

WAITING LIST:

When applications for accommodation are received, they are dated, acknowledged and entered on the waiting list in the order they were received. When a unit becomes available, applicants will be called in the order their application was received (Exception: Applicants for Subsidized Rental units are called in order of need.)

Applications will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list when applicants decline a suite that has been offered to them.

To expedite the admissions process, a number of applicants may be contacted simultaneously regarding a vacant unit. They will be informed that their application is nearing the top of the waiting list, thereby preparing them in the event that the unit is later offered to them. If they decline the unit without being offered the unit, their application will remain in place if the unit is taken by a renter/purchaser ahead of them on the waiting list. If it is taken by a renter/purchaser behind them on the waiting list, their application will be moved to the bottom of the list.

When there is a vacancy and all applicants have been contacted and all have declined, the unit becomes available on a first-come first-serve basis, whether it be for a new applicant or an existing applicant who has changed their mind.

Occasionally, the application file is updated. When this is done, applicants are asked to confirm their desire to remain on the waiting list. If applicants do not reply after a reasonable attempt to contact them has failed, these applications will be considered inactive and removed from the file.

Subsidized Rent: Applications are point rated according to Saskatchewan Community Services Housing Division requirements, and applicants are approved for admission based on need. (The point rating is weighted on the side of financial needs.)

Non-Profit Rent: Applications are considered in the order received. Only applicants that can or are prepared to pay the full market rent will be accepted. Applicants who decline a suite that has been offered to them will have their application moved to the bottom of the list.

The Non-Profit and Subsidized units are managed according to the agreements and guidelines with Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (see Saskatchewan Non-Profit Housing Manual).

Special circumstances:
      - When a rental applicant passes away, the remaining spouse is moved from the two-bedroom waiting list to the one-bedroom waiting list, using the original application date.
      - Rental applicants may be moved to the wheelchair list when the need arises, using the original application date.

Life Lease Apartments: Applicants are considered in the order received, taking into consideration the requests of the applicants and their ability to purchase the unit which is available. Applicants for Life Lease Units must specify the desired floor plans that they want to purchase and would be notified when that type of unit becomes available. Applicants may request specific floors and facing direction. They will be contacted only for suites meeting those specifications. In the event the applicant refuses the offer to purchase the unit they have requested, his/her name would be placed on the bottom of that particular waiting list.

Life Lease Townhouses: Applications are considered in the order received, taking into consideration the requests of the applicants and their ability to purchase the unit which is available.
