Geothermal - Heating & Cooling

The Board of Directors at Saskatoon Mennonite Care Services Inc. is pleased to announce the installation of a 1.1 million dollar ground source heating and cooling system at Bethany Manor. Bethany Manor is a seniors complex with 325 people living in a mix of 237 condominiums, affordable living and assisted living apartments. The complex is owned and operated by 12 Mennonite churches in Saskatoon and surrounding area. The new Geo-Thermal system will employ a field of 200 wells with each being approximately 200 feet deep. Methanol will be circulated through a looped closed system, which will feed into large compressors to produce heating or cooling.

The project is the largest of its kind in Western Canada, with approximately 300,000 sq. ft. of multiple residential dwellings being heated and cooled. The project is expected to save approximately $100,000/year in utility and operational costs. The simple payback before financing is 9.19 years.

The project has received $95,215 Federal funding through Canada’s Energy Retrofit Assistance Program (ERAP) and Energy Innovators Initiative (EII).

The environmental impact on green house gas will be a reduction of 2,957,510 kilograms or some 6,506,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO²) every year.

Other measures in the project include:
- a solar wall which will be constructed to preheat air going into the roof-top units;
- high efficiency lighting upgrades.

An additional Federal grant of $29,235 was made available for the solar wall through the Renewable Energy Deployment Initiative (REDI).

The General Contractor for the project is Taylor Group of Companies out of Saskatoon. The engineering on the project was done by Nova 3 Engineering Ltd.

We have appreciated the cooperation and support of both the Provincial and Municipal Governments in this project, which is expected to become a test site for both the Province of Saskatchewan and for the City of Saskatoon.

The Project is expected to be complete and in full operation by October 2005.
